In May of 2011, Father Schiffer put his hand on my shoulder and said: "Bill it is the ten year anniversary of 9/11 and I want a community monument built on the church property. You are the man for the job." It is hard to say no to a Catholic Priest, so I said "I would be proud to make that happen." Through the generosity of many people from near and far, our fundraising efforts produced the beautiful Celtic Cross we have as our monument today. Local businessmen such as John Giordano and Bobby Mallory and Robert Lani used their talents to make a beautiful backdrop for our community memorial. The whole plan was put on hold when Hurricane Irene blew into town and flooded our beautiful town. Helping those in immediate need was paramount. We literally put the finishing touches on the memorial grounds about one hour before the ten year anniversary dedication and blessing. Many hands make light work and two local masons helped install the bricks and ensure that they would be around for a long time. I always found it very comforting to go there and talk to my firefighter friends that were killed on 9/11 and pray for my friends and family. The bucolic backdrop of Windham Mountain and the presence of God next door make it the perfect place for prayer. I invite all residents and visitors to the Community Monument to reflect on what ever is on their minds and put their trust in God.
